Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, commonly known as Atlanta Airport, boasts a rich history dating back to the 1920s.
The site that is now Atlanta Airport was originally an abandoned racetrack. The city of Atlanta purchased the site in 1925 for a municipal airport, spurred on by the advocacy of local business leaders who recognized the economic potential of aviation.
In 1926, the airport was officially dedicated as Candler Field, named after Asa Candler, a former mayor of Atlanta and the owner of the racetrack site. The first scheduled flight took off from the airport in September 1926.
During the Second (II) World War, the United States Army Air Forces used the airport. After the war, it quickly returned to civilian control. It expanded rapidly, reflecting the overall growth in commercial aviation in the post-war period.
In 1957, the airport was renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport, serving over 2 million passengers a year. The airport continued to grow, with new terminals added and airlines expanding their services to Atlanta.
In 1971, a new terminal was opened. The new terminal was designed as a hub, making it easy for passengers to transfer between flights. As a result, Atlanta’s airport quickly became the hub of the Southeast. In the same year, the airport was renamed after William B. Hartsfield, a former mayor of Atlanta who had championed aviation in the city.
In 2003, the airport’s name was changed again to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, honoring Maynard Jackson, another former mayor, who had overseen the construction of the new terminal.
Today, Hartsfield-Jackson is the busiest airport in the world regarding passenger traffic and number of flights. Despite its size and complexity, it is renowned for its efficiency.
